Examsoft Guidelines

Dear Students,

Use of exam software is not mandatory; you may elect to use a blue book, instead. If you wish to type your exam using SofTest or SofTest-M, however, please take the following steps:

1) Make sure you have an account with ExamSoft: You will receive an email with your ExamSoft login credentials soon. Please contact the registrar’s office if you do not receive that email so that we can ensure you have access to ExamSoft.

2) Download and install SofTest: If you haven’t already installed SofTest from previous exam periods, download and install the program as soon as possible so that we can intercept any potential technological issues, such as incompatibility with your laptop or language settings/antivirus programs that block the program from working correctly.

a. Visit: https://www.examsoft.com/nyls, and in the Exam Takers section, log in using the ID # and password provided to you via email.

b. On the home page:

i. Check your Minimum System Requirements.

ii. Install and register SofTest.

iii. Set up any Notifications that you wish to receive.

c. Open SofTest from your desktop and download the Mock Exam file. Take the Mock Exam so that you can familiarize yourself with the exam software as well as ensure there will be no complications on exam day. Please do not email the registrar’s office asking if we received your Mock Exam file. If you receive an email or some other type of notification that your file successfully uploaded, then the program should work on your computer.

d. Anywhere from one to several days before your exam, an exam file will be made available for download, and you will receive an automated email when it becomes available. Please download the file well before exam day, again to make sure there are no problems.

OR -- Update to current version: If you have already downloaded and installed SofTest from previous exam periods, all you need to do is make sure you are running the most current version. This is extremely important to check, because ExamSoft frequently releases software updates. If you are trying to open SofTest, and you receive an error message that your account has expired, you need to update.

iPad Users: iPad users may download and install a program called SofTest-M onto their iPads. Other e-readers or tablets will NOT work with SofTest. If you wish to use SofTest-M, please take the following steps:

Download and install SofTest-M: Download and install the program as soon as possible so that we can intercept any potential technological issues, such as incompatibility with your device or language settings that block the program from working correctly.

a. Visit: https://www.examsoft.com/nyls, and in the Exam Takers section, log in using the ID # and password provided to you via email.

b. On the home page:

i. Check your Minimum System Requirements (http://support.examsoft.com/link/portal/15157/15194/Article/563/What-are-the-minimum-system-requirements-to-use-SofTest-M-iPad).

c. Open iTunes and search for SofTest-M in the App Store. Install and open the app.

d. VERY IMPORTANT: Set up Guided Access: Guided Access must be enabled for students to begin a secure exam and is needed to ensure that no outside applications will be used during the exam. If it is disabled the student will be removed from the exam and a continuation code will be needed to re-enter.

a. To enable: On your iPad, navigate to Guided Access by going to Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access. Turn the feature “On” and then assign a four digit-password. This must be done before Guided Access can be used. Keep this password in a safe place so you will not forget it!

b. To enter Guided Access Mode: Before starting the exam, and after turning on Airplane Mode, open SofTest-M and triple-click the “Home” button and then select “Start” to enable Guided Access for the exam. NOTE: You may need to re-power on your Bluetooth keyboard after going into Airplane Mode.

c. To exit Guided Access Mode: Triple-click the “Home” button and then select “End.” Please note that you will need to enter your password to enable or disable this feature.

d. If you are stuck in Guided Access Mode or have lost your password, you will need to hard restart your iPad by holding the “Home” and power button simultaneously for 15 seconds. When the device has rebooted, navigate to Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access and turn it “Off.” Afterward, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings to reset your password.

e. Open SofTest-M from your iPad and download the Mock Exam file (ExamSoft’s support site has extensive instructions on this topic): http://support.examsoft.com/link/portal/15157/15194/Article/566/How-do-I-download-an-exam-file-on-SofTest-M-iPad (http://support.examsoft.com/link/portal/15157/15194/Article/566/How-do-I-download-an-exam-file-on-SofTest-M-iPad)). Take the Mock Exam so that you can familiarize yourself with the exam software as well as ensure there will be no complications on exam day. Please do not email the Registrar’s Office asking if we received your Mock Exam file. If you receive an email or some other type of notification that your file successfully uploaded, then the program should work on your computer.

f. Anywhere from one to several days before your exam, an exam file will be made available for download, and you will receive an automated email when it becomes available. Please download the file well before exam day, again to make sure there are no problems.

g. Make use of ExamSoft’s extensive tutorials/FAQs about SofTest-M on their support site: http://support.examsoft.com/link/portal/15157/15194/ArticleFolder/99/SofTest-M-iPad (http://support.examsoft.com/link/portal/15157/15194/ArticleFolder/99/SofTest-M-iPad)

The registrar’s office and the IT department are unable to offer much help with this application, so please contact ExamSoft at 866-429-8889 if you need assistance.

h. NOTE: When you are done typing your exam, be sure to exit Airplane Mode and end Guided Access, or else you will not be able to upload your exam file.

3) Download exam files and mock exam file:

a. If the SofTest Launcher is not already open on your computer, double click on the SofTest icon on your Desktop to open the launcher.

b. Click on the Download Exam Files button. Enter your username and password and click Next.

c. A window will appear with one or more files listed in the box. If multiple exam files are available for download, hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard and click on each file in order to select them all. Once all files have been selected, click Download. Note: If you don’t see any or all of your upcoming exam files, check back closer to the exam date.

d. Once the files have been downloaded to your computer, a Congratulations window will appear. Click OK and then click Close.

4) Take a mock exam: Do this well before exams to ensure that you can successfully run the program on your machine. Please do not contact the registrar’s office asking if we received your mock exam file. You can verify that it worked by checking your upload history or an email that should have gone to your NYLS email account.

5) Review common troubleshooting steps: Recognize which login information the program is asking you for. Know what to do if your computer freezes mid-exam. Learn how to view your exam upload history and how to ensure an exam file has finished the uploading process. Log into the ExamSoft website and click on the Support tab at the top.

6) Have your information on hand: Write down your four-digit, NYLS-issued exam number, as well as your ExamSoft login credentials, and bring this information with you to your exam room. It is important that you do this, because proctors may not have your exam number or your ExamSoft login information with them in the exam room. To locate your exam number:

a. Log into the Portal at go.nyls.edu.

b. Click on the Registration and Records tab on the left.

c. Click on View Exam Numbers.

d. In the box that appears, click on [SEMESTER/YEAR] MIDTERM/FINAL EXAM NUMBERS.

It is your responsibility to be prepared on exam day. Students who arrive unprepared to the classroom may not have time or resources available to solve technological problems, and may need to use a blue book. Best of luck on your exams, and please contact me with any questions.

Thank you,
